BenRiach Heart of Speyside

BenRiach Heart of Speyside Taste Profile

Stats – 40% alcohol, Speyside
Price – $40
Color – Golden straw
Nose – Full and rich.  Citrus and earthy peat.
Palate – Rounding out BenRiach‘s flagship range is the entry level no-age-statement whisky (meaning that several different batches and ages of their scotch were mixed together as opposed to a blended whisky which can contain neutral grain alcohol – think Everclear – and coloring agents).  Misleadingly light up front, but some weight comes through quickly.  Lots of grassy cereal sweetness, but also has a hint of peat.  Some bitter lemon peel, maybe candied lemon zest.  It has almost no spice, very mellow without being weak.  Some sulfur, and slightly floral.  A little oaky, some honey and vanilla is present too.  This is a great choice for Summer or Spring.

Alternatives:

  1. BenRiach 16 Year (86%)
  2. Bruichladdich 16 Year – Chateau d’Yquem (80%)
  3. Michter’s US*1 (79%)

BenRiach 20 Year

BenRiach 20 Year Taste Profile

Price – $85
Color – Light honey
Nose – White wine, floral, and sweet.
Palate – The oldest of BenRiach’s Flagship Range. Rich and low-key.  A mineral taste with a sweetness that coats the mouth.  A hint of apples along with some cocoa.  Just a nip of spice at the end.  Floral, but not at the forefront, sweet but not silky, a little grassy and some sulfur, but mature and well balanced.  Very close to the 16 year, but with a heavier chocolate taste.

  1. BenRiach 16 Year (95%)
  2. BenRiach 12 Year (85%)
  3. Bunnahabhain 12 Year (84%)

BenRiach 16 Year

BenRiach 16 Year Taste Profile

Price – $70
Color – Pale straw
Nose – White grapes, apples, and a little richness
Palate – The mid-tier BenRiach starts out light and fruity. A weighty richness builds a little and tapers to a smooth finish.  A honeycomb sweetness persists throughout. Nice and clean, this one is well balanced. Slightly floral, rich and sweet, with just a hint of iodine at the finish. A great step up from the BenRiach 12 Year if you want a smoother and sweeter sip, as long as you don’t mind the predictable step up in price.

BenRiach 12 Year

BenRiach 12 Year Taste Profile

Price – $45
Color – Very pale straw
Nose – Light and fruity, apples and pears
Palate – Some people like their whisky to be more velvet glove than iron gauntlet, for those after the lighter touch BenRiach is worth considering. Smooth and light on the palate.  Mid body has a mineral taste and some grass.  Floral flavors start to rise.  Very much like soft heather and perfume.  A little spice heats up the finish along with a touch of iodine.  Just the lightest hint of peat lingers.  Some honey meets the very floral character of this whisky at the finish.
Alternatives:

  1. BenRiach 20 Year (85%)
  2. BenRiach 16 Year (85%)
  3. Springbank CV (83%)
